Title: BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 25, 2013 to be "NAACP Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, activists who dedicate their lives to achieving equality and social justice have had a tremendous impact on our nation and helped to make the world a better place to live for all; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1909 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded to advocate for civil rights, equal opportunity, and political empowerment for minority groups in the United States and across the globe; and
 
WHEREAS, the NAACP played a vital role in our nation's Civil Rights Movement by advancing the integration of the armed forces and our public schools, the Civil Rights Acts of 1957,1964 and 1968, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, in addition to organizing volunteers and protests; and
 
WHEREAS, through continued advocacy and grassroots organizing, the NAACP has expanded its scope beyond civil rights to include issues related to economic disparity, health care, education, and criminal justice; and
 
WHEREAS, from April 25th-27th, nearly 300 active NAACP members from 11 states will gather in Pittsburgh for the Eastern Region Convention to be trained on civil rights and organizing strategies, as well as to honor several individuals from the Pittsburgh area for their achievements;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the dedicated efforts of the NAACP and welcome its members and guests that will be attending this year's Eastern Region Convention; and
