WHEREAS, FOCUS BRASIL is a weekend long event aimed at promoting Brazilian culture and the teaching of Portuguese language; and
WHEREAS, the event, which will take place on April 12 and 13 at the Frick Fine Arts Building and the O'Hara Student Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh, is presented this year for the first time in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh event serves as the launch of the new FOCUS BRASIL U-Circuit, an itinerant seminar that will travel between universities to share Brazilian culture with new audiences; and
WHEREAS, on Friday, April 12, the weekend will open with a showcase of Brazilian cultural experiences, including a cinema and media festival, entertainment, and traditional Brazilian foods; and
WHEREAS, on April 13, leading scholars and Brazilian residents will lead panel discussions on Brazilian culture and language for business leaders, language teachers, community members and students.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Focus Brasil for raising appreciation and awareness of new and unique voices in the City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 12 "Focus Brasil Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
