Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the continued efforts of the National Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania Chapter; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of April, 2013, to be “Parkinson's Awareness Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive motor system disorder of which the cause is unknown and currently there is no cure only treatment options to manage symptoms; and,
 
WHEREAS, it is estimated that nearly one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 4.1 million people with PD worldwide and as our society continues to age, the number of individuals with Parkinson's disease is expected to grow. In fact, the number of people dying with Parkinson's disease has quadrupled in the past 20 years; and,
 
WHEREAS, April is Parkinson's Awareness Month which represents an opportunity to become more educated about this neurological disorder and being more supportive to Parkinson's patients and their families; and,    
 
WHEREAS, Moving Day®, a collaborative effort of the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) and the National Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania Chapter, is a day of joining together with people with Parkinson's disease on a gentle 1.5 mile walk to raise awareness and funds in support of the Foundation's mission; and,
 
WHEREAS, Moving Day®, will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at Highmark Stadium; and,
