Body
WHEREAS, when George Manos joined the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council Board of Directors six years ago, he enthusiastically embraced the Board's mission to provide free training to Pittsburgh's less fortunate residents, helping to fulfill GPLC's mission to facilitate the development of necessary skills for low literacy adults to improve the lives of the victims of educational inequality, their families, and their communities; and

WHEREAS, while GPLC's entire Board admirably donates their time, expertise, and funds to support this mission, George's passion led him to consider additional ways to finance and therefore increase GPLC's impact on the City's undereducated and low literacy adults; and

WHEREAS, George and the other Board members instituted a Board-operated fundraising event, the Trivia Bowl, wherein competing teams answer trivia questions to raise money to support GPLC's 500 volunteers, free classes in reading, writing and arithmetic, workforce development, GED preparation and testing, English as a Second Language, computer skills as well as financial and health literacy; and

WHEREAS while the first Trivial Bowl in 2008 occurred in the midst of a recession economy, it earned $30,480, making it one of GPLC's most successful Board of Directors-run activities in the history of the Literacy Council, inspiring other Board members to strive to reach new levels of cooperation and performance on behalf of the City's less fortunate; and

WHEREAS, in five years, the Trivia Bowl has raised over $300,000 for GPLC's programs, making it one of the City's most popular charity events and drawing competing teams from 42 companies and organizations, as well as donor support from Pennsylvania to Florida; and

WHEREAS, the event increases GPLC's position as a strong, positive answer to the adult education crisis; and
