WHEREAS, since the first social work class was taught at Columbia University in 1898, social workers in the United States and across the world have laid the groundwork for organizations to serve people in need and create social change ; and,
WHEREAS, from its start in the 1960's, Social Work Month has been a nationwide effort to celebrate the profession and be a voice for all 650,000 of these highly trained professionals in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the primary mission of Social Work is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, especially the most vulnerable, addressing the emotional, psychological, economic and physical needs of people while weaving the nation's social safety net; and,
WHEREAS, in our region, some of the best trained professional social workers are located at the Jewish Family and Children's Services of Pittsburgh where these individuals play a critical role in helping to improve the social functioning and social conditions for thousands of people through adoption services in the Family Hope Connection, career services through the Career Development Center, counseling through the Squirrel Hill Psychological Services, food assistance through the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry, critical needs and emergency assistance, elder care, guardianship, services for refugees and more; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Social Workers at the Jewish Family and Children's Services of Pittsburgh for their dedicated, impactful and passionate work which makes a tremendous difference in the lives of so many members of our community and who deserve appreciation for their work every day; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, , that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of March 2013 to be "SOCAL WORK APPRECIATION MONTH" in the City of Pittsburgh.
