Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does honor and celebrate Coston Funeral Homes Inc. for 50 years of commitment and service to the city and it's residents; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 26, 2013, to be “Coston Funeral Homes Inc. Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Samuel E. Coston Funeral Homes, Inc. located at 427 Lincoln Avenue in Pittsburgh Pa., was established by Samuel and Wanda Coston in 1963. Samuel Coston, an entrepreneur at heart, received his mortuary license in the 1950's while working at Cain and later Gambrel Funeral Homes, both in the East Liberty neighborhood. After managing Gambrell Funeral Home, Mr. Coston opened The Samuel E. Coston Funeral Home after the death of Mr. Gambrell. As business increased, the Coston's built a 100-seat chapel in the mid 1970's. In 1978, Wanda acquired her license to help cultivate the growing business and four years later, Samuel retired from the Post Office to dedicate his time to the business.

WHEREAS, In 1992, the funeral business began to flourish with the addition of the second chapel which accommodates 150 people. From 1995-1999 the average number of services per year totaled 112. In 1999, Samuel's grandson, Roland J. Coston-Criswell, graduated from Mortuary School and began working in the business. By July 2002, Roland was promoted to manage the business and in December 2005, acquired the company. Since Roland has been working in the funeral business, the average number of services performed per year between 2000-2004 has increased by over 100%; and,

WHEREAS, In 2007, Coston Funeral Homes, Inc. expanded and opened the North Side branch. The funeral home has received numerous awards throughout the years including the “Best of the Best Award” by the National Funeral Directors Association and was named a “Pursuit of Excellence Firm” for the last seven years; and,

WHEREAS, The funeral home is a cornerstone in the community, providing jobs and supporting various efforts to improve the Lincoln-Larimer area. For over 50 years, it continues to be a family owned business spanning over three generations. On March 30, 2013 Coston Funeral Homes, Inc. will celebrate their 50th Anniversary at the Mansion on Fifth; and,
