Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize TechShop for building on Pittsburgh's manufacturing heritage and opening access to the tools that will drive Pittsburgh's creative economy forward for years to come; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare March 26, 2013 to be “TechShop Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the mission of TechShop Pittsburgh, located in the Bakery Square development in Larimer, is to engage, encourage and empower everyone to build their dreams; and
 
WHEREAS, TechShop describes itself as a "playground for creativity," offering memberships that enable creative individuals and craftspeople to utilize more than a million dollars worth of equipment, thereby democratizing access to the tools that enable innovation; and
 
WHEREAS, TechShop offers its members over 16,000 square feet of workshop space equipped with world class tools and equipment, computers loaded with design software, a myriad of classes each month, and expert support; and
 
WHEREAS, TechShop is also committed to improving the lives of veterans by providing more than 2,000 free memberships through the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs; and
 
WHEREAS, products made at other TechShop locations across the country have gained worldwide acclaim, including, Square, a credit- and debit-card reader that attaches to smart phones, and Embrace, whose infant warmers built for premature infants born in developing countries could save 100,000 lives.
