Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize that the refuse workers in the Dept. of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services are a valuable asset to each community in the city; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 5, 2013, to be “DPW, Bureau of Environmental Services Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh Dept. of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services currently has a staff of approximately 196 employees who collect regular household refuse and bulk materials every week from approximately 115,200 residential properties with five dwelling units or less, the Housing Authority in the City of Pittsburgh, the Borough of Wilkinsburg and City government offices and buildings and operates a city-wide litter prevention campaign; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, the Dept. of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services collects recycling every other week from residential properties, the Housing Authority, the Pittsburgh Public School District and municipal buildings throughout the City and monitors businesses and private haulers for compliance with recycling ordinances, according to State law; and,

WHEREAS, although the task of a refuse hauler may appear insignificant to some and without responsibility; it is far from it. Considering that these men and women work early in the morning, sometimes in darkness; endure adverse weather conditions and temperatures from the summer heat and rain, to the extreme cold, snow and ice of winter; and,

WHEREAS, they must be physically strong for the exhausting work of lifting heavy objects repeatedly and operating large pieces of equipment that weigh in excess of 26 tons when loaded; without them, these materials would multiply quickly and would become hazardous to the community; they are exposed to infectious disease and experience encounters with hypodermic needles, broken glass, rusty nails and various other sharp objects, along with corrosive and dangerous chemicals discarded in the trash daily; consider the fact that they must work safe in busy traffic, and accommodate other motorists during peak traffic times of the day, while demonstrating patience and understanding to the customers they service every day, the great residents of the City of Pittsburgh; and,
