Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, who also received the National BBBS Agency of the Year honor in 2012, and their volunteers and supporters for their tireless efforts to help children facing adversity achieve success in life; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 17th, 2012 to be “Big Brothers Big Sisters 3rd Annual Celebrate Coalitions Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on December 17th, 2012 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will recognize the local outstanding volunteers, mentors, and community partners at the 3rd Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Celebrate Coalitions event at Shadow Lounge in East Liberty; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will honor JJ Richardson as the Male Recruitment Advisory Board Member of the Year, Mike Rethage as the Young Professional Outreach Board Member of the Year, Trisha Hyatt as the BIG Speakers Bureau Member of the Year, Amanda Gunther as the Washington County Advisory Board Member of the Year, and both Pittsburgh Power General Manager Michael Gorham, and Riverset Credit Union Membership and Community Relations Representative Patrick Flynn as Community Partners of the Year; and

WHEREAS, since 1965 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh has matched more than 22,000 children with responsible, caring adult mentors; and

WHEREAS, through these strong and enduring one-to-one relationships, the basic developmental needs are met and supported for over 1,200 children annually with role modeling, guidance, and friendship; and

WHEREAS, studies have shown that children enrolled as Little Brothers and Sisters are more confident in their learning abilities, develop a more positive attitude towards school, and are better able to avoid conflicts and make positive choices. 58% of Little Brothers and Sisters achieve higher grades in social studies, languages, and math. They are 52% less likely than their peers to skip school, and 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
