WHEREAS, in 1923, after an increase in automobiles, Omaha Nebraska became the first city in the United States to employ safety patrols, now known as a crossing guards; and,
WHEREAS, since the early 1920's , school crossing guards have become important parts of school crossing because of the role they play in protecting our children and educating them on proper behavior in traffic; and,
WHEREAS, they monitor assigned intersections for dangerous situations and assist and direct children who may be lost or injured; and to some have even become a surrogate mother; and,
WHEREAS, crossing guards have also been called upon to direct traffic to allow emergency vehicles to proceed through intersections, look for unsafe pedestrian or driver behaviors, unlawful parking, poor visibility, report traffic violations and testifies in court as required; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Pittsburgh School Crossing Guards and commends them for their dedicated service to the school children and pedestrians of the City of Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 30, 2012, to be "Pittsburgh School Crossing Guards Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
