WHEREAS, the International Diabetes Federation, a body of over 200 national diabetes associations in over 160 countries, has calculated that 366 million people around the world have diabetes and estimates that by 2030 this figure will rise to 552 million; and
WHEREAS, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Diabetes Association estimate that nearly 26 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes, while another 79 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, around 9% of Allegheny County residents 18 and older have been diagnosed as having diabetes according to a countywide health survey completed between 2008 and 2010; and
WHEREAS, when diabetes is diagnosed early and managed well, complications such as stroke, heart disease, foot ulcers, kidney failure, blindness and other problems can be prevented or significantly delayed; and
WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association is the oldest and largest national organization devoted to diabetes research, awareness, advocacy and education and promoted the establishment of November as American Diabetes Month; and
WHEREAS, to mark American Diabetes Month the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association is sponsoring its annual Diabetes EXPO on Saturday November 10, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and the EXPO is the area's single largest event devoted to healthy and active living with a focus on diabetes prevention and management and for the past several years Allegheny County has hosted the only Diabetes EXPO in the state of Pennsylvania.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize American Diabetes Month and the efforts of the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness and promote healthy living; and
