WHEREAS, the American Middle East Institute was created in Pittsburgh in 2008 in partnership with the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh to promote Pittsburgh in the Middle East; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh is recognized worldwide for its universities and leadership in technology, energy production, life sciences, and green innovation and is uniquely positioned to work with the Middle East, particularly the Gulf States, in these areas; and
WHEREAS, the American Middle East Institute will host its Fifth Annual Conference on October 30, 2012 in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the event will feature a Health Innovation Summit from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh and "Building a Bridge to the Middle East", an evening lecture at 8 p.m. at the Carnegie Music Hall, featuring Tom Brokaw in a conversation with His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al Faisal and Former Prime Minister of Libya, Dr. Mahmoud Jibril.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the American Middle East Institute for its work in developing a greater relationship and understanding between Pittsburgh and the Middle East; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 30, 2012 "American Middle East Institute Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
