WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) is an independent, voluntary organization comprised of former employees of Pennsylvania public schools, including teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses, secretaries, aides, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and maintenance staff, all of whom work to serve the needs of all school retirees of the Commonwealth; and,
WHEREAS, the members of PASR contribute 2.5 times the state average in hours of volunteer service and 8.5 times the state average of hours contributed annually; and,
WHEREAS, 63 percent of PASR members volunteer in their local communities, individually contributing, on average, 308.4 hours per year, for a total of 6,600,876 total hours contributed; and,
WHEREAS, members volunteer in many areas of service such as the Veterans Administration,
August Wilson Center, Religious Institutions, Political Advocacy, Elections/Voter Registration, Tutoring in Schools, National Cemetery, Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities and Bayer Center for Non-profit Management to name a few; and,
WHEREAS, with PASR members volunteering at $21.36 per hour of service in Pittsburgh, their communities have saved $7,445,238; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees for the invaluable hours of service that its members have contributed to their communities in Pittsburgh, and for the city resources that have therefore been saved; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 16, 2012, to be "School Retirees Volunteer Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
