Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors the tremendous impact Spencer United Methodist Church has had on the Carrick community; and THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 16th, 2012 to be Spencer United Methodist Church Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in the early 1800s, the Spencer family hosted groups for worship and Bible study in their log cabin along Sankey Avenue near what is now the border of Carrick and Baldwin Borough; and
 
WHEREAS, their congregation had grown so large that in September of 1837 they began to receive regular visits from a minister on the Chartiers Circuit of the Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in twenty years' time, the congregation founded the Baldwin Chapel, which celebrated its dedication in 1867 in a newly built brick building; and
 
WHEREAS, by the time Spiketown and the surrounding countryside were incorporated as the Borough of Carrick in 1904, the church had changed its name to "Spencer Methodist Episcopal Church" to honor the contributions of the Spencer family; and
 
WHEREAS, the current church building was built in 1925 and dedicated the following year, and has continued to serve the neighborhood of Carrick as a place of gathering and worship; and
 
WHEREAS, the church is this year celebrating its 175th year in the Pittsburgh community with the theme "Open hearts, Open minds, Open doors."
