WHEREAS, in 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, noted Black scholar, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which was later renamed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH); and,
WHEREAS, ASALH continues to carry on the important work of promoting, researching, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating information about Black life, history and culture to the global community undertaken by Carter G. Woodson; and,
WHEREAS, ASALH has chosen to hold its 97th annual convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and, has established a local branch named in honor of Dr. McKenzie's service to the residents of southwestern Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, ASALH has recognized "Black Women in American Culture and History" as the national 2012 Black History Theme; and,
WHEREAS, the ASALH conference offers a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate the myriad contributions of Black women by improving the quality of life for residents of southwestern Pennsylvania; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor, the myriad contributions of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 26-30, 2012, to be "Association for the Study of African American Life and History Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
