Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Ms. Lillian Edith Mitchell for the work she has done on behalf of her community and for her birthday of 100 years.; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, September 10, 2012 to be “Lillian Edith Mitchell Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church is the oldest African American Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  With a deep and profound history in the Historic Hill District, the Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church congregation was originally formed by Rev. Henry Highland Garnet in 1870.; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Lillian Edith Mitchell, daughter of Lillian Ruth and William Mitchell, was born September 10, 1912, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Ms. Mitchell moved to Pittsburgh at an early age and has remained a pillar of the Historic Hill District. She has received educational credentials from various institutions such as Duff's Business School, Fifth Avenue School, Duquesne University and Temple University; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell joined Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church through Confirmation and Baptism at 7 years of age and has been a dedicated member for the past 93 years and counting. She has been a pioneer within her spiritual community, having been elected and ordained as one of the first women in the United States to hold the highly regarded position of elder in the Presbyterian Church; and,
 
WHEREAS, On September, 10, 2012, Ms. Mitchell will turn 100 years old.  At the age of 100, she continues to share creative verses of warmth and love with others in her community through the handmade cars she designs for Valentine's Day every year.;
