Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Mr. Dan Riley for his passion and commitment to the community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 21, 2012, to be “Dan Riley Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, In 1969, Mr. Riley was such a dynamic football player, he received a “Dapper Dan” award, and the MVP “Thom-McAn Trophy” where graduated from Southside high school in 1970. Mr. Riley continued his education at South Dakota University and he received a B.A degree in Sociology and Physical Education. Mr. Riley has been employed with the City of Pittsburgh since October of 1975. Mr. Riley developed programs such as Flag Football, the Summer High-School Basketball league at Arlington Heights center, and Jr. NBA basketball program known as the Citiparks Traveling basketball League; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Riley was a great supporter of the Richard S Caliguiri “Great Race,” and the biggest cheerleader at the finish-line. Mr. Riley's goal was to become a center director, so that he could create unique and necessary recreational programs for youth and residents of the City of Pittsburgh. Mr. Riley believed that recreation is a very significant component that is needed in the Pittsburgh communities. Mr. Riley is very passionate about helping youth develop and distinguish their goals and has always found innovating ways to get youth interested in the recreational programs; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Riley is retiring as director from Paulson Community Center in September 2012. Mr. Riley was able to implement new ideas to help change the culture of Paulson Community Center. Although he faced adversities and challenges he continued to stay focused on the importance of developing programs for youth and residents of the Lincoln-Lemington Community; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Riley was a great mentor to the young girls and boys at Paulson Community Center; by teaching them the importance of carrying themselves with self-respect. He emphasized teamwork amongst staff and the importance of being a positive example for the Lincoln Lemington community. He was instrumental in making sure job opportunities at the Paulson Community Center were offered to residents in the community firs...
