Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Richard Costanzo on his induction to the Heinz History and Sports Center Hall of Fame for his demonstration of exemplary leadership and extraordinary achievement, both on the playing field and off, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 16, 2012 “Richard Costanzo Day” in the city of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Richard Costanzo was born in Pittsburgh on February 17, 1986 and
attended Thomas Jefferson High School; and
 
WHEREAS, Costanzo showed his potential early on, voted two-times high school All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and ADIDAS in 2002 and 2003; and
 
WHEREAS, Costanzo was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to carry the Olympic Torch through a portion of the city in 2002; and
 
WHEREAS, during his first year at Penn State University, Costanzo was named a Big 10 Soccer Player of the Year by ESPN; and
 
WHEREAS, after transferring to the University of Maryland, Costanzo was named co-captain of the soccer team in 2008, where he led his team to win the NCAA Division One national championship, and the Champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference; and
 
WHEREAS, Costanzo graduated with a business degree in 2008, and went on to play for the Minnesota Thunder and later the Rochester Rhinos before returning to his hometown in 2012; and
 
WHEREAS, Costanzo is a current team member of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and founder of the Pittsburgh Soccer Academy (PSA), which assists youth soccer players in their training.
