WHEREAS, Joseph H. Smith was born in Pittsburgh on September 2, 1922 and has resided in the City for his entire life; and
WHEREAS, Smith, the oldest of eight children, is a devoted brother, a faithful husband of 68 years to his wife Alberta, who he calls "Sweets," and a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and uncle; and
WHEREAS, Smith is a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church whose favorite pastime is enjoying time with his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Smith, a long-time solo singer with the Gospel Crusaders, repeatedly inspired audiences with his rendition "Throw out the Lifeline;" and
WHEREAS, Smith worked two jobs for years so that he could afford to move his family from the Allequippa Street housing projects to a single family home on Robinson Street which he still owns with his wife and where he still resides; and
WHEREAS, Smith is retired from his work as a supervisor at the Carnegie Library, where he was employed for many years; and
WHEREAS, despite illnesses and various adversities in his life, Smith remains a humble, steadfast, unselfish, loving, and dedicated Christian man who is greatly respected in the community.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby join Joseph H. Smith in celebrating his 90th birthday; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 2, 2012 to be "Joseph H. Smith Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
