WHEREAS, the Afro-American Music Institute (AAMI) is a community hub for artists that serves to preserve the Afro-American musical tradition; and
WHEREAS, residents of varied social and economic backgrounds have enrolled at AAMI for the opportunity to learn music from an African-American perspective; and
WHEREAS, youth who participate in AAMI programs gain a better sense of self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, and problem solving skills; and
WHEREAS, this year, the AAMI is celebrating 30 years of music education and entertainment; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James and Pamela Johnson, who founded AAMI in the basement of an inner-city church, have dedicated their lives to enhancing the culture of the City and providing educational and cultural opportunities for young people; and
WHEREAS, AAMI's welcoming and friendly environment reflects the spirit of its founders, who have worked tirelessly to provide for a safe educational space centered on music and community.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the important contributions that Dr. James and Pamela Johnson have made to the City of Pittsburgh by enhancing and preserving the City's great cultural traditions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 28, 2012 to be "Dr. James and Pamela Johnson Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
