Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 27, 2012 to be “Dr. Richard Wertheimer Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Richard Wertheimer, an Ohio native who resides in Wilkinsburg with his wife of 36 years, Sarah Wertheimer and their two daughters, will be retiring from his current duties as CEO and Principal of City Charter High School on August 31st, 2012, after helping to found and serve as a part of City Charter High School since its inception in 2002; and,
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Wertheimer is a graduate of Charles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio, and graduated college from Carnegie Mellon University, going on to serve as a Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Pittsburgh Public Schools, Project Manager and Principal Investigator at Common Knowledge, Mathematics Supervisor of PPS High Schools, Mathematics teacher at Brashear and Peabody High Schools, and Mathematics teacher at Upper Saint Clair High School; and,
 
WHEREAS, as a leader of Common Knowledge and the Office of Instructional Technology, Dr. Wertheimer wrote grants that brought in over $10 million to support technology education and infrastructure for Pittsburgh Public Schools; and,
 
WHEREAS, the inspiration to open City Charter High School came from his experience at Common Knowledge, where the implementation of the instructional technology model convinced him that the current school model was not as effective to prepare students for success in the new global economy; and,  
 
WHEREAS, the passage of the PA Charter School law in 1997 provided the opportunity to put the instructional technology model into practice, and was made possible thanks to seed funding from the Heinz Endowments, as well as key support from talented administrators and educators such as Maxine Klimasara, Linda Savido, Jackie Perhach and Lou Tamler;
