WHEREAS, the Lovelace Theatre premiered experimental theatre programs of Cocteau, Pinget, Giraudoux, Ghelerode, and Moliere, in which rod puppets and Japanese-style Bunraku figures were introduced to Pittsburgh audiences as highly evocative, versatile actors; and
WHEREAS, the Lovelace Theatre Company's performance at the 1972 Festival Mondial in Charlesville-Mezieres, France won a bronze medal, being the only American group so honored by the Union Internationale de la Marionette, sponsors of the international festival; and
WHEREAS, Margo Lovelace was invited to study with the Soviet People's Artist Sergei Obraztsov at Moscow's Central Puppet Theatre; and
WHEREAS, the Lovelace Theatre Company developed a cultural enrichment program for Pittsburgh Public Schools which eventually took live theatre annually into 145 schools in Western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Margo Lovelace and her company produced The Puppet Proposition, a half-hour film documentary on the art of puppet theatre, which in 1976 was awarded a CINE (Council on International Non-Theatrical Events) Golden Eagle; and
WHEREAS, the puppets from Margo Lovelace's international collection now live on at the Children's Museum where they continue and will forever inspire and delight the imagination of all.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Margo Lovelace for her undiminished service to the Pittsburgh community, recognizes her inspirational influence on youngsters, students, educators and audiences of many varieties, and commends her for her numerous and diverse artistic accomplishments.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 24, 2012, to be "Margo Lovelace Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
