Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Higher Achievement Pittsburgh for their work to provide high-quality, academically rigorous afterschool and summer programming in support of increasing the proportion of underserved, minority students accessing the Pittsburgh Promise; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare August 3, 2012 “Higher Achievement Olympics of the Mind Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Higher Achievement has successfully expanded its nationally awarded out-of-school program to Pittsburgh, bringing its college preparatory services to students in underserved communities, where 93% of program graduates go on to college; and,
 
WHEREAS, Higher Achievement began in 1975 in Washington DC with affiliates in 3 states, has grown in 2012 to include service to 75 students in the City of Pittsburgh, and expects to include service to 300 students over the next 3 years; and,  
 
WHEREAS, on Friday, August 3, from 9am to 11:30am, the first class of Higher Achievement Pittsburgh students will compete in the first annual Olympics of the Mind competition at Carnegie Mellon University, a showcase for the education students have received during the Summer Academy in social studies, math, literature and science, culminating in the crowning of championship teams for 5th and 6th grade students;
