Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor Allegheny General Hospital on being named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters, the only major teaching hospital in the Pittsburgh area named to this select list; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 24, 2012 to be the “AGH 100 Top Hospitals Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, hospitals do not apply and winners do not pay to market this honor, Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare, uses objective research and independent public data to recognize the best U.S. hospitals; and

WHEREAS, the Thomson Reuters study is unique in that it evaluates hospitals of similar facilities in terms of size and teaching status on measures of overall organization performance, including patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stability; and

WHEREAS, conducted annually since 1993, the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals study evaluates the performance of 2,886 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia; and

WHEREAS, based upon the overall composite score as a reliable provider of high value and effective care to patients and the whole community, Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) demonstrated its systems to safeguard patients from medical errors, to provide treatments proven to get results, and to deliver effective care at a reasonable cost, Thomson Rueters has named AGH as a 100 Top Hospitals award winner; and

WHEREAS, the leadership team, medical staff and employees of AGH have set national benchmarks for the highest balanced performance in the nation demonstrating the values AGH provides to the Pittsburgh region and community:
