Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Amen Corner for recognizing Judge Gustave Diamond with the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence for his outstanding career and achievement in the field of law and justice; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 10, 2012, to be “Judge Gustave Diamond Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner is a prestigious organization which has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1870 and whose purpose is to encourage camaraderie, fraternity and relationships amongst people of all walks of life; and
WHEREAS, the Amen Corner has honored the memory of Judge Robert E. Dauer with an award in his name for Judicial Leadership and Excellence to members of the Judiciary of Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, this year's recipient of the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence is the Honorable Gustave Diamond, Senior Judge, United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, born in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1928, Judge Diamond enrolled at Duke University in 1945 on a football scholarship until he enlisted in the United States Nay and served as a radioman until his honorable discharge in 1948; and
WHEREAS, Judge Diamond returned and graduated in 1951, he later enrolled as one of 67 students in the evening section of Duquesne Law School and was among only nine of those students who graduated in 1956; and
WHEREAS, on May 2, 1978, Judge Diamond was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania, served as Chief Judge of that Court from 1992 to 1994, when he became, and remains, a Senior Judge; and
WHEREAS, Judge Diamond was appointed by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist as a member of the United States Judicial Conference Committee on Defender Services in November 1988, and in October 1990, was appointed Chairman of the Committee; and
WHEREAS, Judge Diamond became the third recipient of the prestigious Solon Award of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association;
