Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize William S. Dietrich II for his lifetime of service and for the many gifts he has left behind to the City of Pittsburgh and its citizens through the Dietrich Charitable Trust; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 10, 2012 to be “William S. Dietrich II Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, William S. Dietrich II was a Western Pennsylvania businessman who worked tirelessly to grow his family steel business but never forgot the meaning of serving his community; and   
WHEREAS, Dietrich was a philanthropist of the highest order who, through the creation of The Dietrich Foundation, has provided a gift of a $500 million fund that will benefit 15 colleges and charities across the region, including record-breaking donations to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University; and
WHEREAS, Dietrich contributed his time and expertise as an active board member of many regional institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the UPMC Health System and the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Dietrich's devotion to academia as a scholar, writer, trustee, and benefactor had a strong influence on the region's development as a leader in medicine, education, and culture; and
WHEREAS, Dietrich has long had the interests of the City of Pittsburgh in his heart, once proclaiming that he always flew coach on business trips to save money for a foundation that would benefit the community that he loved; and
WHEREAS, Dietrich was a Distinguished Eagle Scout, a U.S. Marine, and a lifelong learner whose largesse secures him a spot beside Pittsburgh giants like Carnegie and Frick; and
WHEREAS, Dietrich's philanthropy will create a lasting legacy that will drive the City and its institutions forward for years to come.
