Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the past successes of both Oliver and Perry High Schools as well as look forward to a bright future for the new, unified Perry Traditional Academy, and does hereby declare Wednesday, March 7, 2012, to be “Perry/Oliver Unity Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on November 22, 2011, the Pittsburgh Board of Education officially voted to close Oliver High School and move those students to Perry Traditional Academy; and
 
WHEREAS, the Transition Teams from both schools have worked tirelessly to ensure all North Side students have a safe, warm and welcoming educational home that excels both academically and through the various sports and activities to all those who enter; and
 
WHEREAS, Oliver High School, established in 1925 and named in honor of David B. Oliver, President of Pittsburgh Public Schools <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Public_Schools> from 1911-1922, who was largely responsible for the increase in the number and size of Pittsburgh Public Schools; and whose artifacts will adorn the halls as a reminder of the rich history that the Oliver students will bring with them; and
 
WHEREAS, Perry High School, established in 1923 and named for Commodore Oliver H. Perry, is a traditional academy that will provide strong, consistent discipline, a structured setting, clear expectations, and rigorous instruction to ensure that students will be Promise ready; and
 
WHEREAS, on March 7, 2012 at 8:00pm, the community gathered in Perry High School gym to witness the current Oliver and Perry faculty to play Pittsburgh Steelers players in a basketball game celebrating the creation of a united North Side high school powerhouse;
