Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Mike and Robert-Perry Nichols demonstration of courage and commitment to the most delicate lives in our community; and Be it further resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 28, Mike and Robert-Perry Nichols Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, 2012 marks the twentieth year that Mike Nichols has served the youngest learners in the Pittsburgh Public School system through his personally-designed reading program; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nichols has spent countless hours of his own free time, reading books to the children of Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5, Pittsburgh Arsenal PreK-5, Pittsburgh Fashion PreK-8, Pittsburgh King PreK-8, Pittsburgh Morrow PreK-5, Pittsburgh Vann K-8 and Pittsburgh Weil PreK-8; and
WHEREAS, we also acknowledge Mr. Nichols for his positive influence on young people through his involvement in raising funds for the "Take Your Father to School Day" program; reading to children as a Beginning with Books ambassador; and teaching local students the fundamental principles of the free enterprise system through the Junior Achievement program; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nichols is the father of 19-year old Robert Perry-Nichols, who, one year ago on February 11, received the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's first double-lung transplant performed on a sickle cell disease patient; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Perry-Nichols, following in his father's footsteps of community service, counsels children on the path to transplant surgery with his positive, life-affirming message of recovery from disease; and
WHEREAS, Mike and Robert Perry-Nichols' accomplishments demonstrate the power of individuals who use their unique abilities and strengths to impact many lives throughout the Pittsburgh community.
