Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the contributions and achievements of 2012 National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research winner Christopher Bettinger; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 14, 2012 to be “Christopher Bettinger Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), established in 1863, is a nonprofit institution that recognizes achievement in science by election to membership and provides science, technology, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations; and
 
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, April 30, Dr. Christopher Bettinger will be honored with the NAS Award for Initiatives in Research, which recognizes innovative young scientists, for his work on advanced materials for next-generation implanted medical devices; and
 
WHEREAS, Christopher Bettinger is Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University whose research will reduce the burden of human disease and improve quality of life; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Bettinger was named last year as one of the 35 Innovators under 35 by the MIT Technology Review; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Bettinger is a resident of Shadyside, an avid athlete who has cycled the Pacific Coast, rowed in the Head of the Charles Regatta, and run in the Boston Marathon, and is engaged to be married in June to Teresa Tao.
