Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Diocese of Pittsburgh for creating a legacy of academic achievement, service and faith for 184 years and for instilling important values in our children; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday,January 31, 2011, to be “Catholic Schools Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Diocese of Pittsburgh celebrates Catholic Schools Week January 29 through February 5, 2011 focusing on the theme "Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service." by celebrating Masses, open houses, and activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large; and,
 
WHEREAS, Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 and it is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association, the world's largest private, professional education association and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops; and,
 
WHEREAS, the 2012 theme focuses on three priorities of the Catholic Schools; faith, academics and service, which were formed to make the catholic institutions stand out from other educational institutions; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Diocese of Pittsburgh is the fourth largest school district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with approximately 22,000 students and 1,700 teachers; and,    
 
WHEREAS, with "Academics" being one of the three highlighted themes of the 2012 Catholic Schools week, it is necessary to recognize the Diocese of Pittsburgh for the High Schools who have produced 120 National Merit semi-finalists, more than 100 National Merit finalists, and who have graduated 99% of its seniors with 98% going on to further education; and,
