Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh and their volunteers and supporters for their tireless efforts to help children facing adversity achieve successes in life; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 12th, 2011 to be “Big Brothers Big Sisters Celebrate Coalitions Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on December 12th, 2011 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will recognize the Celebrate Coalitions winners at the 2nd Annual Celebrate Big Brothers Big Sisters Coalitions event at Shadow Lounge in East Liberty; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will honor Ned Schano as the Male Recruitment Advisory Board Member of the Year, John Hagan as the Young Professional Outreach Board Member of the Year, Lew Soltis as the BIG Speakers Bureau Member of the Year, Trish Hyatt as the Washington County Advisory Board Member of the Year, and both Carlow University Student Life Director Chris Meaner, and Chairman Dan Soltesz of Young Republicans of Allegheny County as the Community Partners of the Year; and
WHEREAS, since 1965 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh has matched more than 19,000 children with responsible, caring adult mentors; and
WHEREAS, through these strong and enduring one-to-one relationships, a child's basic developmental needs are met and supported with role modeling, guidance, and friendship; and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that children enrolled as Little Brothers and Sisters are more confident in their learning abilities, develop a more positive attitude towards school, and are better able to avoid conflicts and make positive choices. 58% of Little Brothers and Sisters achieve higher grades in social studies, languages, and math. They are 52% less likely than their peers to skip school, and 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
