WHEREAS, Mr. Dale Checketts, Head Coach of the Bishop Canevin High School Baseball Team, began the “Going Beyond the Diamond” program in order to instill the principle of giving back to the community to his team; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Checketts was inspired to start the program several years ago when the family of one team member suffered a house fire that required one family member to stay at a Ronald McDonald House; the Canevin team collected books and household items to stock the house, and filled a pickup truck with soda pop can tabs to raise recycling funds; and,
WHEREAS, a team parent suggested the team visit the house in person and in December of 2010, the Bishop Canevin Baseball Team delivered toys that were collected and spent time with families and their children at a local Ronald McDonald House playing with the kids, reading stories and even improvised a birthday party for a young child who turned 12 that day; and,
WHEREAS, the team has also raised over $2,000 for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Fallen Heroes Fund; and,
WHEREAS, “Going beyond the Diamond” program is 1of 9 winners of the National Philanthropy Day Awards, where the team was honored as outstanding youth at a ceremony on November 17, 2011; and,
WHEREAS, earlier this year, Sports Faith International recently named Bishop Canevin's Baseball Team its 2011 high school Team of the Year which is chosen from a pool of applicants based on four criteria: excellence in athletics, excellence in academics, excellence in community service and excellence in the Catholic faith; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Head Coach Dale Checketts and the Bishop Canevin Baseball Team for their inspirational service to others off the field and for their continued success on the field; and,
