Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Earth Hour 2008 and encourages Pittsburgh individuals and businesses to participate; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares March 29, 2008, “Earth Hour Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 29, 2008 between 8 pm and 9pm local time; and
WHEREAS, the initiative originated in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour on March 31, 2007; and
WHEREAS, nearly 190,000 individuals and 12,000 businesses around the world have signed up for Earth Hour 2008; and
WHEREAS, the aim of the campaign is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better; and
 
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's involvement in Earth Hour has been initiated by the Oakland Task Force, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, and the Pittsburgh Technology Council.
