WHEREAS, Chatham College, one of our City's premier institutions of higher learning, is celebrating the 135th Anniversary of its Charter on December 11, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Chatham College was founded to provide women with an education comparable to that which men would receive at a "college of the first class";
WHEREAS, Chatham College remains the only women's undergraduate college in Western Pennsylvania, and offers graduate degrees to men and women; and
WHEREAS, through the leadership of President Esther L. Barazzone, Chatham College has grown to educate 1, 250 students in its undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs; and
WHEREAS, Chatham College hosts seven NCAA Division III varsity sports teams, including basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and the first women's varsity ice hockey team in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Chatham College annually awards nearly $4 million in need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarships; and
WHEREAS, Chatham College's 32-acre campus along Shadyside's historic Woodland Road was declared an arboretum by the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta in 1998.
TITLE
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Chatham College on the 135th Anniversary of its Charter; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares December 11, 2004 "Chatham College Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
