Title: THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, commend the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation for all that they do to support the children afflicted with sickle cell disease and their families and the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does also commend The Pittsburgh Players, Kings and Queens Motorcycle Club for organizing the 1st Annual Motor-Sickle Ride. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, proclaim Saturday, September 20, 2008 as “The 1st Annual CSCF Motor-Sickle Ride Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, sickle cell disease is an inherited disease which affects the red blood cells and, under certain conditions, changes the shape of the red blood cells to resemble a crescent moon or sickle and the red blood cells become stiff and sticky and may block the normal blood flow to the tissues which can lead to debilitating pain and even death; and
WHEREAS, sickle cell affects 1 in 400 African-Americans, it also affects those of many different ethnic backgrounds, including Mediterranean, Hispanic, Indian, Asian and Southern European ; and
WHEREAS, the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, was founded in 2002 with a mission to meet the needs of children with sickle cell disease, and their families, in the areas of education and social and economic support; and
WHEREAS, Children's Sickle Cell Foundation has designed its programs, including the Learn-to-Swim program and the Peer Education Program, with the wellness of the family in mind and began the Family Support Program in 2003 in a collaborative effort with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, and in order to raise awareness of sickle cell disease, The Pittsburgh Players, Kings and Queens Motorcycle Club, is hosting the 1st Annual Motor-Sickle Ride, where motorcyclists will come out to show their support for children with sickle cell disease and their families; and
