Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition for all their great work and congratulates all of this year's honorees.

WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is a non-profit corporation founded in 1972; and
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the Coalition is "…to improve the 14th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh through educational and cooperative endeavors of individuals and groups from the area seeking to enhance the physical and social attributes of the community"; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition has set up and maintains many community programs including a Block Watch, a Citizens' Patrol, Commercial Development, an Education Committee, Long Range Planning, a Litter Patrol, Parks & Open Space, and Residential Quality; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition succeeds in serving the needs and interests of the people who visit and live in the 14th Ward; and
 
WHEREAS, the organization is honoring the following citizens of the 14th Ward who have made a significant contribution to furthering the mission of the Coalition:
 
      Dr. Jared Cohon, President of Carnegie Mellon University
      Dr. Barbara Mistick, Director of the Carnegie Library System
      Mr. Doug Shields, Councilman, District 5, City of Pittsburgh; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition will celebrate the individuals at its 13th Annual Citizens of the Year Dinner on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at the Holiday Inn - University Center.
