WHEREAS, after the merger between two existing newspapers serving Pittsburgh’s Jewish community: The Jewish Criterion, published since 1895, and The American Jewish Outlook, published since 1934, the Jewish Chronicle was founded in 1962 to provide local, national, and global information of Jewish interest; and,
WHEREAS, since its founding, the Chronicle has provided reports of news, insights, and opinion pieces of the local, national, and international Jewish community; and,
WHEREAS, the Chronicle has earned several awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania for excellence in journalism; and,
WHEREAS, after more than 55 years of serving the local Jewish community, the newspaper will be relaunched as the “Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle,” to emphasize its local roots and local coverage; and,
WHEREAS, the newspaper will be redesigned to create an easier experience for its loyal and new readers alike; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle will generously provide free subscriptions to everyone in the Jewish community in order to ensure the reliable exchange of news, information, and opinions and to become the central platform of communication for the Jewish community in Pittsburgh; AND,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the staff and board members of the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle for decades of service to the Jewish community in Pittsburgh and beyond, and for successfully revamping the newspaper for the future; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 21st, 2017, to be “Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
