WHEREAS, 9-1-1 for Kids is an international public safety educational program that teaches children how to save property and lives through the proper use of 9-1-1, the nation's universal emergency telephone number; and
WHEREAS, 9-1-1 for Kids recognizes children throughout the US and worldwide who have successfully used 9-1-1 through its international, national and local "9-1-1 HEROES" program; and
WHEREAS, every year hundreds of thousands of calls are received at 9-1-1
centers across the country and many of these callers are young children, some of whom may be frightened and do not know what to do or say once they have reached the 9-1-1 dispatch center resulting in delays getting emergency personnel to the scene often with tragic consequences; and
WHEREAS, the 9-1-1 for Kids classroom program will teach children when and how to use 9-1-1 and what to say to police, fire or medical emergency personnel, and teaches children to call for help when they need it for themselves or for others to assist in saving lives and property; and avoid costly abandoned or prank calls which tie up the 9-1-1 dispatch system; and
WHEREAS, the 9-1-1 for Kids classroom kit has been proven successfully effective due to its child friendly educational program to assist in teaching critical emergency telephone skills to young children through educational material and videos about the proper use of calling 9-1-1; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes and commends the importance of the 9-1-1 for Kids program; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby proclaims June 13, 2006 "9-1-1 for Kids Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
