WHEREAS upon graduating in 1959, the 109 member graduating class of the former Fifth Avenue High School made a pact to meet again on the 50th anniversary; and
WHEREAS during the weekend of August 21-23 the Fifth Avenue High School Class of 1959 will reunite for their 50th Class Reunion; and
WHEREAS built in 1894 as a large Romanesque/Gothic Revival building, Fifth Avenue High School served the lower Hill District community until its closure in 1976; and
WHEREAS Fifth Avenue High School was the first fireproof school in Pennsylvania, and the building is now designated as a historic structure; and
WHEREAS the school was a dominant force in city sports, with the archer as their mascot, and red and white as their colors, chosen because of the school's remarkable architecture filled with Gothic and Victorian arches lined with red and white tiles; and
WHEREAS although they are not holding their reunion on the moon, as originally planned in 1959, the Class of 1959 is excited to hold true to their pact and reunite; and
WHEREAS most of this close-knit group of individuals were classmates from kindergarten at Miller School onto high school, and many remain friends even today, despite being scattered all over the country; and
WHEREAS the weekend's events include a Friday night Meet and Greet, Saturday night dinner/dance, and Sunday morning breakfast.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does wish to recognize the Fifth Avenue High School Class of 1959 on their 50th reunion by declaring Saturday, August 22, 2009 "Fifth Avenue High School Class of 1959 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
