Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does value all businesses within the City's limits, it is particularly proud of those which have established a long history within our city, and hereby, congratulates Marshall Elevator, the oldest continuously owned and operated elevator company in the United States of America, on their 190th anniversary. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh proclaims Thursday, September 18, 2008 to be “Marshall Elevator Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Marshall Elevator was founded in 1818, in Diamond Alley in downtown Pittsburgh, as a custom ornamental iron maker and blacksmith shop called Marshall Brothers and later added machining work to its product roster; and
WHEREAS, Marshall Elevator, moved to Mary Street on the City's South Side, in the early 1900's, where it is still headquartered today; and
WHEREAS, by the mid-1800's Marshall Elevator began its pioneering work in early elevator technologies and capitalized on the high-rise building boom and, by 1940, its freight elevators and dumbwaiters were sold worldwide; and
WHEREAS, throughout the past 190 years, Marshall Elevator has grown and evolved to meet the needs of its customers and the ever changing market; and
WHEREAS, many buildings within the City of Pittsburgh are outfitted with elevators from Marshall Elevator, including Heinz Field, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, SouthSide Works, Gulf Tower, Rand Building, UPMC Presbyterian and Shadyside Hospitals and PNC First Side;.
