WHEREAS, the African American Women’s Speakers Bureau (AAWSB) is an organization of volunteers comprised of African American breast and cervical cancer survivors, professional and non-professional healthcare workers, and community resource persons committed to increasing breast and cervical cancer awareness and screening among African American women in the Greater Pittsburgh and surrounding communities; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the AAWSB is to provide breast cancer education and community outreach to African American women in our local and regional communities, increase breast cancer screening and early detection practices among African American women, and eliminate health care disparities among African American women; and,
WHEREAS, the speakers bureau holds workshops for churches and civic groups, provides breast cancer risk assessments, information on obtaining free or reduced mammograms and provides financial assistance to women recently diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing breast cancer treatment; and,
WHEREAS, in 2005, they expanded their vision to provide educational materials and workshops on prostate cancer to African American men and colorectal cancer to both men and women; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend The African American Women’s Speakers Bureau for empowering women to live without the devastating effects of breast cancer; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday October, 31, 2017, to be “The African American Women’s Speakers Bureau Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
