WHEREAS, Partnership 2000, begun in 1995, is a project of the United Jewish Federation to create dynamic relationships between Pittsburgh and its sister city of Karmiel and the region of Misgav, both located in the central Galilee in northern Israel; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the relationship established by the Jewish Community of Pittsburgh, Karmiel and Misgav became an official sister city to Pittsburgh through the Greater Pittsburgh Sister Cities Association at a ceremonial signing in Pittsburgh City Council Chambers on May 23, 2006, by Mayor Bob O'Connor and Mayor Adi Eldar and Deputy Mayor Baruch Rosen ; and,
WHEREAS, Karmiel, founded in 1964, is the commercial, educational, cultural and industrial hub of the Western Galilee and is a planned modern city consisting of self-contained neighborhoods of close to 50,000 people and Misgav is the Region in which it sits; and,
WHEREAS, Partnership 2000 of the UJF has established a multitude of joint projects which have significantly impacted all three communities, developing connections between Americans and Israelis in the areas of social affairs, youth and teen programming and economic development; and,
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel, a monumental event that marks the rebirth of the Jewish State in 1948 and the fulfillment of the dreams of the Jewish people to provide a refuge for the oppressed and persecuted and to live in a democratic and pluralistic society; and,
WHEREAS, to celebrate Israel's 60th Anniversary, the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh will sponsor the Yom Ha'atzmaut celebration on May 8, 2008, at the Community Day in Squirrel Hill and welcomes to the United States, Mayor Adi Eldar of Karmiel and Mayor Ron Shani of the Misgav Regional Council.
