WHEREAS, On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in the 42nd annual recognition of Earth Day, voicing their appreciation for the planet and demanding its protection; and
WHEREAS, since its inception in 1970 as a response to the emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, Earth Day has inspired us all to consider our part in protecting the environment; and
WHEREAS, two organizations working in the Pittsburgh area have made an exceptional contribution to improving the quality of the region's environment, continuing to raise awareness of air and water quality issues; and
WHEREAS, the Green Infrastructure Network, a voluntary partnership of more than 35 organizations, businesses, academia, authorities, and government units, is a leader in building consensus toward brownfield remediation, alternative energy development, stream protection, land use management and conservation, and green stormwater infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health will conduct the second phase of their outdoor air quality monitoring project in Downtown Pittsburgh this summer that will provide vital information on the City's air quality and help guide future policy discussions;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends these two organizations for their valuable contributions to the public dialogue and toward improving our region's environmental quality; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim April 22, 2012 as "Earth Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
