WHEREAS, the United States Navy protects and defends the United States of America on the world's oceans, around the clock and is ready to always defend America, preserve economic prosperity, and keep the seas open and free; and,

WHEREAS, the United States Navy is instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of more than $23 billion in annual exports from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, more than 12,000 thousand active and reserve force Sailors currently in the Navy are from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, the amphibious transport dock, or a landing platform dock (LPD), are warships that embark, transport and land elements of a landing force for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions; and,
WHEREAS, the latest USS Pittsburgh (LPD-31), a San Antonio-Class amphibious transport dock, will be the fifth to be named after the Steel City; and,
WHEREAS, four vessels have served in our name - the first serving in 1861, an ironclad gunboat used during the American Civil War, the second, an armored cruiser used during World War II, the third, a Baltimore class cruiser that supported the landing at Iwo Jima during World War II, and the fourth, a Los Angeles Class submarine used from December 1984 to August 2019; and,
WHEREAS, the U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas J. Anderson, Program Executive Officer for Ships will be in Pittsburgh from November 14 to November 17 to promote the naming of the USS Pittsburgh (LPD-31) with corporate, civic, government, education, community service organizations, and veterans of the U.S. Armed Services.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we the President of Council, City Controller, and Mayor of Pittsburgh do hereby recognize and honor the United States Navy for the opportunity to engage and educate Pittsburghers about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity; and,
