WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh has numerous monuments and memorials preserving the honor and memory of members of our armed services who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country; and
WHEREAS, the Allegheny Elks Lodge #339 raised $1,000 from a National Elks Foundation Grant to improve the condition of the monument; and
WHEREAS, the American Legion Post 81 donated a new U.S. flag for a ceremonial flag-raising; and
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the intersection of Sandusky Street, Stockton Avenue and South Commons Street, the Pipitone Group <http://www.pipitonegroup.com/>, a local integrated marketing firm located in Observatory Hill, dedicated their time and gardening skills by cleaning and restoring the 23rd Ward Veteran's Monument as well as installing new plantings in the area's historic Deutschtown Blumengarten; and
WHEREAS, the Allegheny Elks Lodge #339 Flag Day observance has been an eagerly anticipated community event since 1909; and
WHEREAS, the following organizations have offered support and partnered with the planning and preparation of this memorial restoration project in time for Flag Day on June 14:

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the important work of all participants on the 23rd Ward Veteran's Monument project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, June 12, 2012, to be "23rd Ward Veteran's Monument Restoration Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
