WHEREAS, the 28th Annual Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Charities will take place on May 14, 2010, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the organization; and
WHEREAS, Catholic Charities began in 1910 by helping new immigrant families obtain food, shelter and clothing and continues today with offices in six counties that provide basic necessities, as well as additional services for the uninsured, homeless and refugees; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Catholic Charities is to serve with excellence, professionalism, integrity and compassion, the human needs of individuals and families, regardless of their religious affiliation, and to provide leadership in mobilizing the resources of parishes and the wider community in addressing these needs; and
WHEREAS, Catholic Charities presents the Caritas Awards in honor of those individuals in our community whose accomplishments reflect the wisdom, ideals and vision necessary to create a more benevolent world; and
WHEREAS, the 2010 Caritas Awards will be presented to:
· Service - McMutrie Family, Haiti Relief Support
· Living the Spirit - St. Bede Parish, Pittsburgh, PA
· Flame of Hope - Bishop Paul J. Bradley, Bishop of Kalamazoo, MI.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the 100th Anniversary of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and commends the organization's efforts to provide care and service to those in need in the greater Pittsburgh region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares May 14, 2010, "Catholic Charities Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
