WHEREAS, Bishop Mark A. Eckman has devoted his life to the service of God and the people of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, embodying the virtues of faith, humility, and pastoral care throughout his decades of ministry; and,
WHEREAS, he entered priestly formation at Saint Paul Seminary in District 2, is a graduate of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and received a Master of Divinity degree from Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe; and,
WHEREAS, Bishop Eckman was ordained to the priesthood on May 11, 1985, and has served across multiple South Hills parishes as parochial vicar, high school chaplain, pastor, and administrator across multiple South Hills parishes and was deeply involved in youth formation at Seton LaSalle and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech; and,
WHEREAS, he was consecrated as auxiliary bishop in 2022, and on July 14, 2025, Bishop Eckman was installed as the 13th Bishop of Pittsburgh and embracing the call to shepherd the diocese with the motto “To serve in faith and charity”; and,
WHEREAS, Bishop Eckman most recently served as Vicar General/General Secretary of the Diocese and has held positions on various diocesan and national advisory boards, always striving to uplift others through service and compassion; and,
WHEREAS, known for his love of family, photography, and the outdoors, Bishop Eckman exemplifies spiritual dedication, community leadership, and a deep connection with the people he serves; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Bishop Mark A. Eckman for his unwavering dedication to the Gospel, his pastoral heart, and his vision for a Church united in love and service; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 30, 2025 to be “Bishop Mark A Eckman Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
