Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the important work and contributions that Pittsburgh Action Against Rape provides on a daily basis, and does hereby declare April 16, 2016 to be "PAAR Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, an estimated one in four women and one in six men will be sexually assaulted within their lifetime; and

 

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) is an organization that provides comprehensive services to over 3,100 victims of sexual violence including men, women, children and the LGBTQ community; and

 

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1972, PAAR is one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the country, and remains the only organization in Allegheny County solely dedicated to serving victims of sexual violence and preventing sexual violence; and

 

WHEREAS, PAAR strengthens the community by providing services that include medical and legal advocacy, a 24/7 helpline, counseling, and prevention programs for K-12 schools, parents, colleges and universities; and

 

WHEREAS, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and on April 16, 2016, community members will gather at the Fairmont Pittsburgh, for PAAR’s annual celebration, in honor of survivors of sexual violence; and,
