Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby commend the Fort Pitt Society of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their continuing dedicated efforts to the preservation of the Fort Pitt Block House and the heritage of the City of Pittsburgh, and does hereby declare July 15, 2008, to be Fort Pitt Block House Rededication Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Fort Pitt Block House was constructed in 1764, standing as Pittsburgh's oldest architectural landmark; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Pitt Block House remains the only remnant of Fort Pitt, a key British fort during the French and Indian War: “a clash of men at arms that shook the world to its core,” starting here and lasting from 1755 to 1763; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Pitt Block House, recognized as part of the Forks of the Ohio National Historic Landmark, has been preserved and administered by the Fort Pitt Society of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1894; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to that certain Deed of Conveyance by Mary Elizabeth Schenley, the Fort Pitt Society provides for the preservation of the structure in perpetuity and promotes the historical significance of the site through interpretation and education; and
WHEREAS, after being closed for a year of structural conservation and property updates concurrent with the restoration of Point State Park, on July 15, 2008, the Fort Pitt Block House celebrates a grand reopening; and
WHEREAS, since July 15, 1895, when the Block House first opened to the public as a museum and historical site, the Fort Pitt Society has never charged an admission fee, deeming the site a national treasure that should be accessible to the public to be appreciated and enjoyed; and
WHEREAS, this latest preservation effort marks a significant milestone in the history of the Fort Pitt Block House and sets the stage for another century of survival of the last vestige of the British Empire in Western Pennsylvania and the only tangible reminder of the birth of Pittsburgh;
