Title: WHEREAS, Richard Caponi is the 2007 Allegheny County Labor Council Dinner's Honoree and "Labor's Man of the Year"; and WHEREAS, Richard Caponi is the Director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union District Council 84, which represents more than 8,000 workers in 48 local unions across Southwestern Pennsylvania and is currently a Vice President of the AFL-CIO Allegheny County Labor Council, Secretary-Treasurer of the Western Area Labor Federation and a Board Member of the Pennsylvania Employees Benefits Trust Fund; and WHEREAS, Richard worked from 1979 until 1984 for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a correctional officer at Western Penitentiary and became a member of AFSCME Local 2500, elected to the Executive Board and then President of the Local Union before being the first corrections officer to join the staff of AFSCME Council 13 in June 1984; and WHEREAS, Rich was promoted to Assistant Director for the Council in 1992 and served in t...

WHEREAS, Richard Caponi is the 2007 Allegheny County Labor Council Dinner's Honoree and "Labor's Man of the Year"; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Caponi is the Director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union District Council 84, which represents more than 8,000 workers in 48 local unions across Southwestern Pennsylvania and is currently a Vice President of the AFL-CIO Allegheny County Labor Council, Secretary-Treasurer of the Western Area Labor Federation and a Board Member of the Pennsylvania Employees Benefits Trust Fund; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard worked from 1979 until 1984 for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a correctional officer at Western Penitentiary and became a member of AFSCME Local 2500, elected to the Executive Board and then President of the Local Union before being the first corrections officer to join the staff of AFSCME Council 13 in June 1984; and

 

WHEREAS, Rich was promoted to Assistant Director for the Council in 1992 and served in that capacity until his appointment as Council Director in January 2004.  In November 2003 Rich was elected School Board Director in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District and was honored and received the Italian Heritage Society of America Award for Labor in 2005; and

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Pittsburgh recognizes and congratulates Richard Caponi for his foremost dedication, exemplary leadership and outstanding contribution to workers and their families, the labor community and the region's economy.
